coffee candy

Sugar as a vehicle for caffeine...Sometimes on a hot day when I'm sitting still listening to good things everything is just right, so much so that I relax and nod off.  And there's no one to bring me a cup of coffee,

and going to get my own is out of the question.  That's why coffee nips were invented.  I tried buying coffee candy here, and did find some one year in a pharmacy!
The last few years I've been curious about making it myself.  I found a recipe here, which makes a "coffee-ish" candy, I wanted more than that, so I added 4 times as much coffee as the recipe calls for, leaving the other ingredients the same.
It took quite a while for it to boil up to the right temperature, the stringy stage when you put a drop of candy into the water.
Tammy helped me with this project, she also took the pictures.

I almost forgot to mention that we got nearly 800 gm, I think that's nearly a pound!

Rose Petal Jam

We were out visiting some of our favorite people yesterday and we were served Rose Petal Jam; that's jam made from rose petals.  The flavor is like flowers!
Ira gave us about 500 grams of petals off her rose bush, we got the recipe and made some when we came home:
First we rinsed them in cold water and drained them.  You can see the weight in grams here, including the weight of the colander.
Next we added 1.5 cups of sugar and mashed the petals into the sugar with a wooden spoon.
It got quite watery, then we boiled it on the stove...
Until the petals became translucent -
after which we sealed the beautiful jam into cute little jars.
